Columbia Alum in Eight Nights Cast — at Detroit Public Theatre Through Nov. 5

Kurt Kanazawa

Theater fans and others, we wanted to make sure you knew that a Columbia Alum — Kurt Kanazawa (CC’11)  is in the cast of Eight Nights, currently at the Detroit Public Theatre. We'd hoped to do a Club event with a cast meet-and-greet but timing was too tight. So please consider seeing the play and, if you've not yet been there, the Detroit Public Theatre, whose mission is to produce nationally recognized plays and programs with world-class writers, directors, actors, and designers.

According the L.A. Times: Jennifer Maisel’s Eight Nights has “breathtaking emotional impact.” It has received 9 Ovation Award nominations in Los Angeles winning the Ovation Award for Best Playwriting.

While Kurt Kanazawa is not a local alumni, maybe you knew him in school. Maybe you've seen his work. If you go, and get a chance, please let him know you heard about the play here.

Eight Nights
by Jennifer Maisel
Detroit Public Theatre through November 5, 2023

A powerful and urgent story, Eight Nights takes audiences on a profound journey alongside Rebecca Blum, a German Jewish Holocaust survivor who arrives in New York in 1949 at the age of 19. We travel with Rebecca through eight nights of Hanukkah celebrated over many decades, and bear witness to both her resilience and her struggles as she builds a life, a family, and a diverse community of loved ones. Jennifer Maisel's work explores the effects of the Holocaust on four generations of one family, and Rebecca’s drive to move forward and build a life of love, joy, and meaning, even as the trauma of the past remains present for her and future generations. Eight Nights illuminates our shared human experience and the connections and commonalities amongst communities that have endured oppression, persecution, and trauma including Jewish American, Japanese American, Black American, Middle Eastern American, and LGBTQ+ American communities. The ensemble includes Kurt Kanazawa, acclaimed stage, screen and television actor.

Tickets can be purchased at www.detroitpublictheatre.org or by calling the box office at (313) 974-7918.
